At the shelters dogs that look like any bully mix are most often called Pit Bulls or Staffordshire Terriers. To my way of thinking without knowing the dogs lineage and having the peds the dog is a mix breed or simply put, a mutt. Folks look at the word "mutt" as a derogatory word but it's not, simply a dog of unknown lineage. These mixed breed dogs can have an instability bred into them or might have been abused but when something happens it is called a "pit bull".

The shelters and the BYB's do more to hurt the name of the APBT then anything the dogs ever did by grouping every dog with a big head and rose pricked ears a pit bull.
